ST. LAWRENCE MARKET NORTH
Project type
Architecture + Interiors
Date
June 2025
Location
Toronto, ON
Client
ERA Architects Inc.
A newly completed civic anchor in Toronto’s historic core, the St. Lawrence Market North Building reinterprets a 200-year-old site through a contemporary lens. Designed by RSHP Architects (Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners), with Adamson Associates as Architect of Record and ERA Architects overseeing heritage integration, the project balances bold architectural expression with deep contextual awareness.
The structure’s exposed structural frame, some finished in RSHP’s signature orange steel, introduces a distinctive visual rhythm to the public realm and contrasts the surrounding masonry fabric. Designed for multi-functional use, it’s built around civic adaptability: the ground floor hosts the long-standing Saturday farmers market, while the upper levels house City of Toronto offices, tribunal rooms, and Ontario Superior Court courtrooms during the workweek.
In photographing this project, I focused on architectural symmetry, strong leading lines, and the building’s integration within its surrounding environment. This series of St. Lawrence Market North photos highlights not only the geometry and materiality of the architecture, but also its connection to the urban fabric. A visual narrative of how contemporary civic design can coexist with heritage character.
